Eines von nur 2.290 gebauten Baur-Cabriolets
Frühes Exemplar noch vor dem Facelift
Attraktive Farbkombination
One of only 2,290 Baur convertibles built
Early, pre-facelift example
Attractive colour combination
Delivered new to Italy
When BMW launched the ’02 Series with the 1600-2 in 1966, the recipe was remarkably straightforward: a compact body, powerful engines, low weight and a chassis that did not regard winding roads as an unfortunate necessity. Before long, there was demand for an open version.
Baur in Stuttgart answered the call. At first, it built conventional full convertibles. They lacked rigidity, however, which sat rather uneasily with BMW’s ambitions. Increasingly stringent safety requirements also cast doubt on their future. Baur therefore developed a design with a fixed roll-over hoop, a removable roof panel above the front seats and a folding hood over the rear compartment. The convertible had, in a sense, become a Targa – only done the BMW way. Production began in the autumn of 1971.
Following the 1973 facelift, with rectangular rear lights, a black plastic kidney grille and revised bumpers, the open ’02 was offered exclusively as the 2002. Its two-litre four-cylinder produced 100 hp, which, combined with the modest weight, made for thoroughly brisk performance. After all, an open BMW hardly needed enormous power to be entertaining.
Only 2,290 examples of the Baur convertible were built by 1975. It remained considerably rarer than the closed ’02 models and a distinctly individual member of the family in appearance, too.
Today, that is precisely where its appeal lies. The 2002 Baur combines the nimble handling of the ’02 Series with plenty of fresh air and a design unmistakably rooted in the 1970s.
A little convertible, a little Targa – and a thoroughly generous helping of 2002. BMW continued with the concept right up to the E30 generation, which ultimately also gained a proper full convertible.
This BMW Baur convertible dates from 1972 and was therefore built before the range underwent its major facelift. Accordingly, it still has round rear lights, a narrower kidney grille and a chrome radiator grille. The interior, too, is unmistakably a product of the 1960s.
The BMW was delivered in December 1972 to the province of Brindisi, in the heel of Italy’s boot. The Mediterranean climate has visibly agreed with this Bavarian. As an early Baur Targa, it is not only rare but also retains the many charming details of the first ’02 generation.
